Can a permanent resident lose access to a bank account?

What to know about residence card expiry dates and bank checks in Japan.

Possibly. Some transactions may be temporarily restricted if you do not respond to a bank’s request for updated information. This does not mean that a bank account automatically expires because the holder is a permanent resident.

Permanent residents still have a card expiry date

Permanent residents do not have a period-of-stay expiry date. However, the residence card itself has an expiry date and must be renewed. Banks may ask for the renewed card and other current information as part of ongoing identity, residence and transaction-purpose checks.

If your bank contacts you

Do not ignore letters, app messages, email or online-banking notices. Check the deadline and the bank’s official submission method. Required documents and procedures vary by bank.

If a transaction is already unavailable

Contact your bank first and ask why the service is restricted and what documents are required. The bank may request your renewed residence card, another ID or proof of your registered address. Some services may remain unavailable until the bank completes its review.

What to check

  • The expiry date printed on your residence card
  • Whether your address and phone number registered with the bank are current
  • Letters, email and app notices from the bank
  • Whether you reported the renewed residence card to the bank
